Should we not treat this case as the Viagra for our impotence at this criminalisation of innocent seafarers?
The whole world economy is in recession because of the greed of the few, what happens to the captains of that industry, golden handshakes, golden parachutes and multi-million dollar bonuses.
What happens to the captains of my industry for apparently, no fault of theirs; jail time, loss of earnings, depression, separation from family. Wouldn’t it be better if instead of putting few oil drops in the ocean we were all busy making sure people by the millions were losing their livelihood and houses? Then we would not need to go to jail but be given more money for having bankrupted the biggest corporations.
The seafaring fraternity has absolutely no interest in this sad story because we are all waiting it to happen to us. Then and only then will we be really interested. Too late by then, too late.
Don’t worry your day is not too far. 70% of my crew has no idea about the hapless Captain and Mate of m/t Hebei Spirit.
I have no solutions, except extreme measures; in our own interest perhaps we have now to explore the possibility of declining to sail our vessels into countries that put us in jail. I am here to earn a living not to visit the jails in different countries.
